Increased river flows and reservoir volumes due to torrential rains in recent days. On the Mondego River in Coimbra, the dike protecting the riverbanks and surrounding land collapsed, causing flooding and the collapse of part of the highway deck that crosses the river. 

The reservoirs are full and must be released in a controlled manner. But even with controlled release, and with the torrential rains, river flows increase, causing flooding in the surrounding areas, towns, and cities.
