Solar System

The Sputnik-1, initially named Iskusstvenni Sputnik Zemli and the Portuguese Esputinique-1, was the first artificial satellite, that is, the first object put by humanity into orbit around a celestial body, in this case the Earth. Launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, it was the first in a series of satellites produced by the Sputnik Programme, the ultimate objective of which was to study the properties of the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere, the conditions for launching payloads into space and the effects of microgravity and solar radiation on living organisms in order to prepare manned missions.
